I KNEW you were an amazing man…and this encounter and your reaction to it proved it!
You are absolutely right about tacking our own words on and wondering about the others agenda…sadly, this is the cause of many miscommunications. (Actually I think someone recently might have done that with our discussion on a candy bar but the comment was innocent, though afterwards I could see how it could be taken incorrectly. Anyway…)
No matter what the soldiers intention, you handled it well and as usual, I have learned yet another lesson from you…accept what is said without reading more in to it. Take the positive…not my inner critic’s negative.
